Okanagan Mountain has literally risen from the ashes. Back in 2003, the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire destroyed the area. The Consiglio family purchased the land and started planning its revitalization. Their plan – to turn it into a park for everyone. There's even a residential zoned area at the bottom of the hill where 50 homes are planned.
Tourists and locals alike can head up to Kelowna Mountain for an experience like no other. "Once you are here, you'll never want to leave," said Consiglio. "The four suspension bridges are amazing and one is already the longest in North America. We also have an authentic wine cave complete with a chandelier. "
Since it's opening in June of 2013, tourists and locals alike have explored this amazing property. Your journey starts at the 6,000 sq. foot Tuscan Welcome Centre. The first bridge is the Earth Bridge, which spans 400 feet and reaches from cliff to cliff. At the end of this bridge you will find the magnificent Ice Wine Cave, where you can enjoy a local sample of VQA wines.
From there, it's up and over the Sun Bridge, 100 feet above the ice wine vineyard. Once you reach the sundial, you'll be treated to some of the best views the Okanagan has to offer. Make sure you bring your camera!
Then it's time to take a deep breath and take your first step across the longest suspension bridge in North America. The Water Bridge is 800 feet long and brings you to the cliff walk, positioned above a 100-foot waterfall.
Finally, the Vine Bridge will take you to the Legacy Chair mid-station for a ride back to the Welcome Centre. There's a 2,000 person outdoor amphitheatre, where, depending on the time of year, you can get a picnic lunch, grab a snack or even catch an outdoor concert.
You may see some white stuff on the ground up there, but it's not snow, at least not real snow. "Okanagan Mountain will have specialized snow carpet installed," explained Consiglio. "When complete, there will be 18 runs, a rail park and Olympic half pipe which is scheduled to be open late 2014. You'll be able to ski and snowboard 12 months out of the year. We are in an area of marginal snow so that when we do get snow it's like having the perfect permanent base."
From now until the end of the year there is no charge to tour the area Saturdays and Sundays (admission will be charged in 2014). Be prepared to dress for uneven outdoor terrain. Children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult, and pets are welcome but must remain leashed at all times. There is no outside food or drink allowed.
