Snowbird RV Show & Sale
Be sure to attend a show in your local area this winter.
Words by Jessica Rider
RV shows can be a little overwhelming if you are not prepared, especially if you want to purchase a new motorhome, trailer, or fifth wheel. Now that the national and regional events are once again scheduled in the coming months across Canada, it’s important to relieve any anxious feelings you may have before attending one in your area.
As my husband and I purchased our previous and current RV at a local dealer show, I can tell you that I was a little overwhelmed with all of the choices the first time. By the second time, however, I was well prepared and had the process pretty much figured out.
Browsing the New Models
When you’re attending a show to purchase an RV, make sure you’re ready to buy one. For instance, consider how you will finance it or what your monthly budget is. This will help you narrow down your options. It’s also important how you want to enjoy RVing. Do you prefer staying in maintained campgrounds or plan to boondock off-the-grid? Will you travel from one location to the next or stay at one location for a while? This will help you decide on the type of RV to buy.
Another aspect to determine is if you’re in the market for a travel trailer or fifth wheel, how will you tow it? You’ll need to know the towing capacities of your tow vehicle and determine the weight rating of the RV. These factors will narrow your choices down even more.

RV Buying Tips
After some brainstorming, start preparing for the show by following some of these added tips:
- Create a ‘must have’ list. You may want an RV with an outdoor kitchen and bunks or one with a large lavatory and dinette. Regardless of your preference, do some research on the manufacturers and models that have the designs you prefer. It will help you stay focused.
- Visit the show’s website to learn about the dealers who will be attending. Then, determine the brand of RVs they sell. Remember, dealers sometimes increase the prices at a show due to all the costs of attending one. There are also often ‘show specials’ but it’s best to do some homework to get a good idea of the costs, including added taxes and extra charges.
If you’re serious about buying an RV, remember to be patient. You don’t have to choose one that day. You may even find some other units that you like. So, take your time to decide what will work best. You can always return - or visit your local dealer - another day.
Look at models within your budget and meet your preferences. There are more than 100 different brands and floorplans of RVs. Some more show-buying suggestions include:
- Take your time. RV shows can get crowded so if you see a popular model you like, don’t let other visitors rush you. Sales representatives are also there for your assistance, but always avoid deals you’re not comfortable with.
- When looking at a model, lay down on the beds, stand in the shower, sit down on the toilet; do everything you would normally do when you will be camping to get a feel for the RV. A good rule of thumb to remember is to choose a slightly larger model. You may think you don’t need the extra space, but in all reality, you will.
