With word of Fords Ranger possible coming back to market and the Chevy Colorado making waves in the industry, there was a plethora of mid-sized trucks adorning the SEMA grounds in 2017. With our own Dodge Dakota build in the works, we can certainly see the appeal. Here’s what we spotted during our stay.
Cooper Tires 5.11 Tactical Tacoma
We were drawn to this Toyota Tacoma in the Cooper Tires booth and kept finding subtle touches on it every pass. From the sunken spares, to the stealthy mounting of the auxiliary lighting (thank you for not adding a gargantuan light bar), it was hard to hate this tan desert trail killer. The suspension was exactly what we would expect from Camburg, dialed in and ready to rock. All the tactical gear hanging off the side may be a little much, but that can be easily remedied!

Complete with multiple shocks per corner and a cab full of mojo, this 90’s desert throwback hit home for us. As a current NORRA race rig it’s good to know that this truck is still being used as it was intended. Originally a factory back race truck competitor and winner in the past, a full restoration has been completed by Todd Richards Motorsports, and last we heard, the truck is up for sale. We need a raise.

Working in collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles, this overlanding themed Colorado felt perfect to us. With a 2.8l Duramax diesel powerplant under the hood, factory lockers both front and rear, and an aggressive but useful stance, we’d let this truck follow us home any day. Sunk in control pods for fresh water and auxiliary power/air outlets grace the sides of the rig and were just the tip of the iceberg of parts and pieces we hope AEV will come to market with. Please, please, please, please, can I have one???
