Consumer grade, plastic gas cans bloat up in the sun, they leak, and they don’t pour well. When you need a reliable way to store extra fuel for long, off-road trips, they just don’t cut it. Enter Scepter Canada with a real contender.
Scepter Canada, an Ontario based company, developed their Military Fuel Canisters to meet Canadian and U.S. military requirements for a lighter, stronger, more durable fuel can. More than one million fuel cans have seen service in extreme climates and conditions, mounted on military trucks and light armoured vehicles. They have been beat up, shot at, and according to their sales rep, even driven over! The 20L and 10L gasoline versions (red indicator strap) as well as the required fuel nozzle can be purchased at Princess Auto.
The 20L model, carried on my travels this year, fits in a standard jerry can holder and has triple handles, allowing for easy manipulation. The fuel nozzle fits very well into the filler on my 4Runner, preventing spills, but does have to be stored separately, which is inconvenient. Fuel flow is very fast and smooth thanks to the air-vent tube in the neck. These cans are extremely strong and have seals that really work. They have seen hot days, mounted on their sides atop my 4Runner, with minimal signs of expansion and never once leaking. I’ve even tried running one over with no leaks.
They are expensive, and the fuel nozzle is sold and stored separately, but in my opinion, this fuel can deserves its reputation and is well worth the money.
