Over the past weekend (October 17, 2015) the British Columbia Sport Fishing Guide and Rodney’s Reel Outdoors hosted the 3rd annual Kelowna Fishing Derby on Okanagan Lake.
Every year the two parties put on a Summer Derby that takes place Saturday of Fathers Day weekend and a Winter Derby that falls in October.
The derby is very unique as it is “Catch and Release”, and is truly one of a kind. Every angler has a custom ruler and once a rainbow is brought on board, it is placed on the ruler and a photo is taken. The photo must also include the unique-to-the-date derby wristband. The photo is then sent via text or email to Derby Headquarters for an official confirmation of measurement in inches. The angler with the longest rainbow trout wins the cash. There are many other prizes given out throughout the day.
This years winner were:
- $2,000 - David Golinski – 28”
- $1,000 – Len Palik - 25 7/8”
- $500 – Shane Pennoyer – 24 5/8”
There were also special $50 prizes given out throughout the day. Randy Tarr and Paul Jarvin for the next fish brought on board; secret length prizes to Tom Smith and Carter Jardine for 10” catches, Mike Broskinoff for a 12” Rainbow and Dale Grimes for a 16”.
The Summer Derby will take place on Saturday, June 18th.
