Fishing news is really a mixed bag internationally. Alaska and Washington State are making some significant changes to chinook/spring/king salmon harvest regulations for commercial, sport and subsistence fishers. The fishery management actions will affect salt and fresh water fishing areas. Conservation and sustainability of salmon stocks are driving these actions.
Canada has two similar situations on its west coast:
- On the mainland in Northern BC - the Skeena and Nass Rivers areas
- On the mainland in the Fraser River system and its tributaries
Chinook/spring salmon management actions for the above Canadian waters are in the formulation phase. There are lots of conversations and meetings with the Department of Fisheries (DFO) and commercial, recreational and First Nations fishers, as well as many other stakeholders. Stay tuned - we should have official information by April 30, 2018.
Now for some really good news. Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet are expecting chinook/spring/king returns in excess of 100,000. We are also anticipating a significant increase in local coho/silver returns. DFO is likely going to increase portions of our inside waters to four coho/silvers per day, possession eight. Daily limit will allow four, but only two can be wild, thus encouraging fishers to retain more hatchery clipped fish. Chinook/spring/king limits will remain two per day on inside, and likely will remain the same in outside waters, possession four.
Early season halibut fishing has been great! April 1st brought in a new set of size limits for halibut retention. The one per day, two in possession remains the same as last year. Retention sizes are now one up to 115cm/46in, approximately 22.6 kg (50lbs), and one under 83cm/33in, approximately 9 kg (20lbs).
