John Wright from Kelowna BC with a typical early season Chinook
Avid Sportfishing
Our season got off to a great start in May with good numbers of Chinook right out of the gates. The good salmon fishing has persisted through the first half of June with some fantastic all day action resulting in some 30+ fish days for Chinook. Not a lot of big fish around yet but a ton of action for scrappy springs in the 17 to 22 pound range.
Prevailing Northwest winds have prevented us from accessing some of our other salmon fishing hotspots so we are looking forward to calmer weather.
Halibut fishing has been productive as usual and we’ve had success in all of our usual hali holes for butt’s in the 20 to 70 pound range.
There have been some large schools of herring throughout Cartwright Sound since the beginning of the season and water temps are much colder than we saw last year. This is a good thing for feed fish and salmon that tend to flourish in cooler water and it could mean less jellyfish, which were a problem in 2015.
So far its been another successful start to the season with lots of fish and happy customers. We can hardly wait to see what the next couple of weeks brings, as the Chinook start packing on the pounds.
