It is no longer necessary to go out to the highway to pick up Springs/Kings & Coho. They have made the turn and the fish are feasting on lots of bait all around Catala Is., Double Is., Pin Rks., & Ferrer Pt. in Esperanza. No doubt they will swing into Nootka soon at Beano Cr., Maquinna Pt. & Rks., Wash Rk. & the Nootka Lighthouse.
The average size of the Chinook is up by 5 lbs over the last 2 yr average. They are 18-28 lbs and growing daily. Largest Spring/King so far is the 33 lb Tyee pictured. Congratulations to Kyle.
Halibut – We are still surprised at the volume of Halibut that continue to come in daily. With the 'not to exceed 133 cm' regulations this season, the average Hali weight is hovering around 37 lbs. The other interesting thing about fishing flatties this year is that they are everywhere - all their normal places as well as most of the popular salmon fishing areas. Every day there are confirmed stories of catching Halibut while trolling for Salmon.
Ling & other Cod - Nootka & Esperanza have long been known for having huge schools of bottom fish. They can be found on a contour on the outside of most reefs.
