Big chinook
Pursuit Sportfishing
The months of May and June has been very good fishing both locally in the Vancouver harbour, Bowen Island, Howe Sound and on the Gulf Islands. We have been landing quite a few chinook in the 15 lb range and the odd 20+ lb fish mixed in. There has also been the odd coho taken lately, and this trend should pick up as the Capilano coho start to show up later in June and peak in mid to late July. I think the fishing will only get better as June progresses, so now is the time to be out on the water chasing these feisty chinook.
This August we are anticipating a HUGE run of pink salmon, so combined with the usual strong runs of chinook the fishing should be fantastic. These Pinks are easy to catch so imagine how the fishing will be with 5,000,000+ fish forecast.
Ucluelet Fishing Report:
The fishing is picking up on cue over in Ucluelet for us. Most days the salmon fishing has been very good inside Barkley sound and when we decide to go offshore the fishing for salmon and halibut has also been good. La Paruse bank and Long Beach have been the hot spots the last few weeks but deeper in the Sound there are good numbers of smaller chinook still feeding. As June rolls along we will see the fishing pick up dramatically and will continue to improve until late September. Chinook and coho salmon start showing up in massive numbers mid to late June and the average size of salmon increases in July and August. This is world class salmon fishing to say the least.
As usual we have been dragging spoons and hoochies on the bottom at Long Beach and on the outer banks. The salmon are holding mid-water inside the sound, so depths of 100-160' have been productive.
