In today’s fast-paced world, beating traffic is among the most difficult problems to face. Whatever city you are in, traffic jams are everywhere, especially in the morning when people rush to work and in the afternoon to early evening when workers head home.
Because of all that, motorcycles have become more and more popular. These vehicles are smaller and easier to maneuver, so they can get through narrow shortcuts and even in between cars just to get ahead and beat time.
However, because of such maneuvering, motorcycle riders are also among the most prone to accidents. Because of this, motorcycle manufacturers have become more conscious about safety, and we discuss some of the technologies that they’ve incorporated into the design and structure of their motorcycles to promote safety.
LED Lighting
More than just making the motorcycle look sleek and cool, LED lights also make it a lot safer. At its most basic, they make the motorcycle much more visible on the road. This is especially useful during times when visibility is low such as at night or when it’s raining heavily.
Anti-Lock Brakes
Anti-lock braking systems (or ABS) are common in cars, trucks, and even airplanes. It works by preventing the wheels from locking during a sudden brake so that the wheels maintain their traction on the road.
Because the effectiveness of ABS, it should not come as a surprise that it has been applied now on motorcycles. It pretty much works the same way – the wheels are prevented from locking so that the motorcycle maintains its traction and the driver never loses maneuvering control.
It appears that the use of ABS on motorcycles has been very effective. Data from 2015 show that motorcycle accidents were reduced by around 31 percent because of the use of ABS. While this is an achievement, those who are still not that fortunate might need assistance. Stability Control
Motorcycles often lose balance during turns, especially when the driver accelerates or brakes during such precarious situations. With this, it is clear that motorcycles are safer if they are equipped with mechanisms that help them retain their balance at all times.
Stability control programs have been incorporated into the design of motorcycles. These systems analyze traction control and angling data so that only the safe amount of power or brake can be used by the driver when in motion.
Of course, there are other safety features in motorcycles. Some units are purposefully equipped with low-powered engines so that speeds can be controlled. These units are ideal for those who are new to driving. There are also some motorcycles now that come with complete system monitoring mechanisms.
Even with all those, it is still recommended for riders to wear the appropriate safety gear at all times. It’s good to be protected; a crash can still happen because of the negligence of the other drivers that the riders share the road with.
