Activity abounds in and around Galiano Island.
Words by Steve Fennell
Galiano is unique to the Gulf Islands. It’s the closest to the mainland, which makes it more accessible from many ports on the BC coast, and its stretches 27.5 km (17 mi) from one end to the other qualifying it as the second largest in the Gulf Islands. What makes it really special however is few can match its sheltered anchorages, abundance of natural attractions, relaxed island vibe, and essential services, which are never too far away.
The commercial side of Galiano is in Sturges Bay, located at the south end of the island with an assortment of great accommodations, plus dining, shopping experiences, where you’ll gain a true sense of this island’s culture. Nonetheless, a testament to its natural beauty are the six Provincial Parks, scattered throughout the south, central and northern regions. Many offer a choice of waterfront/beachside campsites, meandering trails, historical landmarks, and access to the water to enjoy kayaking, fishing, and more.
With such a blend of activity, there are many reasons to visit Galinao. To curb your enthusiasm, however, here are just five that will certainly make you plot a course to this rural boating destination for 2020.

The pebble, shell midden beach and waterfront at Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park.
1. Montague Marine Provincial Park
Montague Marine Provincial Park is the oldest and quite possibly the most popular park among boaters on Galiano. It’s the first marine park of its kind in British Columbia and sprawls across 102 hectares of the island’s southwest side, approximately 10 km (6 mi) northwest of Sturdies Bay. As a boater, you’ll appreciate the transient docking at the Montague Harbour Marina (that offers many services, including bike, moped, and kayak rentals), which is about a 15-minute walk to the park. For closer access, there are 30 mooring buoys and dock facilities right near the park’s shore. It can accommodate vessels up to 11 m (36 ft). For larger boats, simply tie off on a mooring buoy and tender in.
Once on land, access to the park from the docks is via a Shell Beach Staircase on the north-west side of the lagoon, just south of the boat launch. Overall, the park’s terrain is diverse as you can stroll along the white shell beach, explore tidal lagoons, or admire the open meadows, lush forests and craggy headlands. What’s more, the island’s long inhabited history is evident of the midden (one of many) on the shell beach as well as Gray’s Peninsula as both areas were inhabited by native people more than 3,000 years ago.
Escaping the daily, hectic schedules is what boating is all about. This is a park where you can walk the same land as those peoples of centuries gone by; admire the lush, rich forest of Douglas-fir, Western Hemlock, Western Red Cedar and Arbutus; admire beautiful sunsets every night; and enjoy a unique climate, ecology and wilderness.

The boat-access only Dionisio Point Provincial Park.
2. Dionisio Point Provincial Park
Dionisio Point Provincial Park is only accessible by boat and is great place to spend a few days in solitude. Located at the north end of Galiano Island and overlooking Porlier Pass, Dionisio Point Provincial Park is secluded from the foot traffic to the south and is where you can set up an anchorage, then tender in to explore everything the island has to offer.
Similar to other Provincial Parks on Galiano Island, exploring the pebble beach reveals shell middens that indicate native occupation from more than 3,000 years ago or select hiking trails lead to a series of archeological sites that were once used by Penelakut First Nations.
Today, many come to this park to enjoy leisurely day hikes, mountain biking, stroll pebble beaches, explore the unique rock formations, or relax on the sand beach. Of course, kayaking is popular around the shores of the park, as is fishing and diving (its recommended for experienced divers only due to the strong currents). Whether you’re below or above the water’s surface, there are always great opportunities to view wild life including sea lions, seals, otters, many shorebirds, and even dominant bald eagles – the BC Coast at some of its finest.

The Hummingbird Inn (seen here) and The Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa offer the perfect night (or nights) out from your vessel.
3. The Galiano Oceanfront Inn & Spa and Hummingbird Pub
It’s not all about lush nature and adventure on Galiano Island. If you want to spend a few nights off your boat (and camping just isn’t your style) The Galiano Oceanfront Inn & Spa is a great choice. Some new enhancements include:
- Fresh, stylish colour schemes with new flooring
- New docks with shorepower
- A newly renovated lobby and outdoor patio
- All-new bathroom fixtures, plush furniture, wardrobes and custom cabinetry with a bar fridge, microwave, coffee station and glassware
Upgrades have also been added to its on-site villas including updated showers, throw rugs, and even "smart" thermostats to better control heat and comfort. More updates are expected this year. For more enjoyment, try a few hours at the re-branded Madrona del Mar Spa or relax at the on-site Atrevida Restaurant and Atrevida Lounge overlooking the water.
The Hummingbird Pub in Sturdies Bay is another way to further enjoy your time on the island. With its casual atmosphere, diverse menu, live entertainment, plus darts and pool tables, this Galiano Island favourite is perfect for a “night out.” If your boat is moored at the Montague Harbour Marina, scheduled shuttle services to The Hummingbird Pub are available, adding more convenience to enjoyment.

Galiano Island shares the same creative available art works as other Gulf Islands.
4. The Arts
While it may come as no surprise that the arts are prevalent on Galiano, it’s definitely worth taking the time to browse the art galleries, shops and boutiques where many artists commission their works. Most – if not all – are found at the southern end of the island around Sturdies Bay and provide a great experience on Galiano where you can find something with every visit. From detailed ceramics, expert glass sculptures, and textiles to hand-crafted wood works and paintings from local artists, the choices are endless and you’re bound to find that added touch for your home or specific collection.
