Last week, the federal government released its 2nd draft action plan for northern and southern residents. It outlines measures to address the threats to orca habitat in the Salish Sea, with the objective of increasing the population. While improved in some areas, the lack of immediate action and clear accountability around who is in charge is still missing and, if implemented as is, the slow decline of this species is unlikely to change.
Today, there are only 84 southern resident killer whales in our Salish Sea.
The federal orca action plan arrives 15 years after the species was declared endangered, but you only have until August 14th to tell the government your thoughts on the plan.
You don’t need to be an expert to comment. Let the government know that you care about the recovery of this majestic species. Please tell DFO that we need them to lead on action to protect southern resident orcas from contaminants to noise to salmon protection. Our orcas cannot withstand any more delays!
