After a wait of over two years, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has finally released the Draft Action Plan for Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whales (pdf). Now we have until April 16th to offer thoughts on this plan.
After years of legal action and delay, this was supposed to finally be the plan for action to reducing the threats to this species caused by pollution, disturbance, and the loss of the salmon they eat.
Sadly, our first review of the plan sees more inaction than action, which is incredibly troubling. In the coming weeks we will be delving further into the details and offering our suggestions on how we can start improving the habitat that is critical to the orcas - today.
We hope you’ll take time to review this plan and offer your thoughts on how we can better protect this iconic species that is important to our oceans, our culture, our economy, our home.
