Like many bodies of water across North America, both expansive and secluded, Okanagan Lake has an array of mooring buoys at many destination points, providing the utmost convenience and scenic anchorages for recreational boaters.
While many mooring buoys can be found at various points throughout the lake, the Kelowna Yacht Club (KYC) has been instrumental in supporting these efforts since 1995 through its exclusive Public Mooring Buoy Program. Funded from the exhibitor fees at its popular Kelowna Boat Show every spring, the program has not only ensured additional moorage buoys on the lake for the last two-plus decades, but are consistently maintained to offer reliable mooring options for years to come.
There are currently 30 mooring buoys located north of the bridge between Raymer Bay and Caesar's Landing, and are closely monitored in the event rigging repairs, re-installations or re-locations are required.
“The mooring buoys are available for all recreational boaters to further enjoy Okanagan Lake,” says Leona Smith, Sales and Marketing Manager for the KYC. “As the Club is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, we are excited to share how we have been part of the community from its very beginning. The Public Mooring Buoy Program has just been one way we have been giving back to the boating community, while encouraging family boating activities, and promoting boat safety and education on Okanagan Lake. Keep an eye out for the “KYC” buoys as they are listed ‘For Pubic Use’ so use them and enjoy another great season on the lake.”
The Kelowna Boat Show, held at the KYC April 25-26, 2020, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and provides boaters with many great options to further experience the boating lifestyle. With exhibitors from the Okanagan Valley, many parts of the BC Interior and other regions in the province, the event showcases up to 150 new boat models – from cruisers and wakeboard boats to pontoons and runabouts – plus an assortment of water sports gear, safety equipment and more.
Additionally, the entry donations into the Kelowna Boat Show are used to support the KYC’s Youth Sailing School. All sailing programs are open to public enrollment and welcomes children as young as four years-old and adults of all ages.
