Yanmar Marine International has launched the Dtorque 111 twin-cylinder 50-hp diesel outboard. In 2015 Yanmar signed an exclusive distribution agreement with the engine’s manufacturer, Neander Shark, which is based in Germany.
With an expected lifespan of more than 10,000 hours, the Dtorque 111 is designed for the small workboat market. The motor makes 50 hp at the propeller with a torque output of 111 Nm (newton meters), or 81.9 foot-pounds, at 2,500 rpm. This should provide plenty of oomph to get a boat on plane and to push heavier craft.
“With many commercial operators maintaining a single-diesel fuel policy to avoid risk of fire and explosion, the market potential for the Dtorque 111 is highly diverse,” Floris Lettinga, YMI global sales manager, said in a statement. “So far, the main option for small workboat propulsion has been the gasoline outboard. No longer is that true!”
Although the Dtorque 111 is being targeted initially at the workboat market, the motor should draw industrywide interest because diesel outboards are seen by many as the next evolution in engines and propulsion.
The two-cylinder engine is the smallest with common-rail fuel injection. It also features turbocharging with dual counter-rotating crankshafts in an aluminum block. Exhaust emissions fall within the European Union’s RCD 2 limits. At full throttle, the Dtorque 111 burns 12 liters of fuel per hour at wide open throttle.
Yanmar and Neander have spent the last two years sea-trialing the Dtorque 111 in six European Union countries.
“We invited a wide cross-section of our customers around Europe to performance-test the outboards in differing sea states and loading conditions, gathering as many opinions as possible,” Lettinga said. “Our research has confirmed that this product is ideally placed for the light-duty commercial market, from wind-turbine servicing and fish farming to harbor and patrol duties, water taxis and superyacht charter services. We are confident that the combination of long range, low running costs, durability and low emissions delivered by this unique diesel outboard will appeal to operators across a wide range of applications.”
The Dtorque 111 is SOLAS (MOB)-certified and is in production, with engines scheduled to be delivered in the fourth quarter of this year.
