As part of Suzuki’s Clean Ocean Project, with a focus on reducing plastic waste in the marine environment, Suzuki Motor of America has launched the world’s first microplastics collecting system.
The collecting device is designed for its outboards of 40 hp and higher, and is installed under the cowling without affecting engine operations. By filtering cooling water as it passes through, the device collects plastics and other pollutants then returns the cleaned water to the sea. Suzuki says the device collected urethane, nylon, wood chips and other materials in testing off Japan.
The company claims to also be looking into the packaging materials for its outboards and parts resulting in a reduction of plastic usage by 2.3 tons a year.
The collecting system will be available as an option next year, with plans to make it standard equipment.
