Those that have taken to the waters to social distance, you still need to be aware of ways to keep the water safe for everyone. It is your responsibility to be well-trained and informed on boating safety - Transport Canada’s Safe Boating Guide is an in-depth go-to resource. Below is a list of the minimum requirements.
- Host a minimum amount of guests - those within the same household or social bubble.
- Be prepared - aside from making sure you and your vessel are fit for travel, pack masks to keep first responders safe and alert them before hand if you have been experiencing flu-like symptoms or have been out of the country.
- Learn the rules of who has the right of way from this insert of the Safe Boating Guide. Always be aware of other boaters around you – non powered vessels like kayaks and paddleboards have the right of way.
- Wear Your Lifejacket. Legally you must carry a Canadian approved PFD on board, appropriately sized for each passenger.
- Don't Boat Impaired.
- Anyone driving a motorized boat must have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. In addition, take boating courses.
- Cold water is a significant risk. Learn how to protect yourself.
