The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute surveyed over 2,000 American adults and found that there is confusion about fuels used by boaters and owners of power equipment, caused by changes in the fuel marketplace.
According to the study:
- 61% assume that any gasoline sold at gas stations is safe for their cars and also for boats and other small-engine products.
- 68% use the least-expensive grade of gasoline whenever possible to fill up their cars.
- Nearly 9 in 10 are not aware that Octane 88 fuel contains more ethanol than Octane 87 fuel
- Majority say the small voluntarily placed warning label from the EPA is not good enough and should be larger, clearer and mandatory.
Avoid a mistake at the pump by educating yourself; know your fuel and look before you pump.
The president and CEO of OPEI, Kris Kiser says, "Higher ethanol blends, like E15, E30, and E85, are illegal to use in most outdoor power equipment and can damage or destroy it, and invalidate manufacturer’s warranties in many cases.”
“Manufacturers are doing their part” ... “explaining to consumers that warranties can be invalidated by mis-fueling and spelling out clear fueling directions in consumer instructions. But we can only do so much when we’re talking about having to educate the entire country.”
