One thing all boaters share in common is that we love being on the water. We also share the same set of laws regarding right of way. However, two boaters can be twins, have the same boat, the same job, similar number and size of family members in the boat, while enjoying the same watersports at the same time. But once they get to the dock, their lives can diverge completely. I’m talking about boat storage.
In a perfect world, every boater would have a protected lake or ocean front lot where his or her boat dock comes complete with a boat garage with a lift. Their boat would remain protected from the elements, vandals and thieves, and be easily loaded, unloaded and accessible. Pinch me.
Every storage option has its benefits; from dry rack storage where your boat is protected from the elements but you have to plan ahead to launch; to leaving it moored in a marina exposed to the elements but supremely accessible; to towing it to the lake or launch point of your choice and subsequently towing it home.
Here are the advantages of dry storing your boat at home, which you may not have considered. Some storage options have some of the same advantages, but not all.
- Dry storage protects your boat from the potential damage that can be done moored in a storm, deterioration caused by UV light, dust, and mould, bombing runs by seagulls, and from marine critters that love to make a winter home of your boat.
- It will reduce the cost of boat ownership as less maintenance is required like annual anti-fouling, and your boats’ resale value will be higher because it is in better shape.
- Theft and vandalism can be reduced because the dirtbags can’t see your boat and you can lock it up tight.
- It’s environmentally friendly, as there is less spillage/leaking of sewage, oil and fuel in the waterway, and reduces the impact of toxins from anti-fouling paints.
- Your boat is less likely to suffer from scratches and gashes since you are the one moving it as opposed to an errant boat storage employee.
- It’s easy to give your boat a quick inspection, get at your boat for light maintenance work, or switch props for a different style of boating.
- You can use it whenever you want, for that pre-dawn fishing excursion or the sunrise pull on the waterski.
- Boating to a different lake or launch point is as simple as picking a new destination that day.
- Loading luggage, gear and supplies is easier than hauling it all down to the dock.
- No monthly rental fees, or annual membership dues.
So why doesn’t everyone do it? Well, not everyone has space in the garage, some boats are too big to tow, some people don’t have a vehicle capable of towing their boat size, and others simply have that property on the lake we were dreaming of earlier (sigh).
If you are in the first group, and you have room for a carport or an additional garage, Easy Build Structures has the answer. This company from Surrey, BC has a number of customized solutions to provide you with dry boat storage, and the convenience having your boat at home. Even if you’ve been jamming the boat in your garage, just think of what you could do with all that space!
There are more than a couple of advantages with the Easy Build Structures over building a garage using traditional construction methods.
Portability. With the "slip-fit" frame, you are able to disassemble, move, and re-build their structures with little to no material loss. This is ideal for boaters that need a fast, temporary solution for coverage that may not want a permanent building. In addition, this provides the option for re-sale in the event you move or don’t need the building any longer.
Their frame system allows for quick assembly with the added benefit of the strength and durability of steel. Their product offers a maintenance-free structure once assembled that has a forty-year warranty on the sheet metal panels.
Customization. They are able to use their standard dimensions to customize the package to suit your needs. They can range from roof-coverage only, to partially enclosed, all the way to fully enclosed and sealed garage packages. They customize the building to include overhead and man doors, windows, insulation, ventilation, etc. As well, their building packages are able to be added to in the future, which provides the opportunity to adapt your building as your needs change over time.
Cost. It is less expensive.
Their two main carport structures are the Classic and Grand Carports. They use the same framing system (2" x 3" galvanized 14 gauge steel) with the only difference being the way the roof metal is orientated. For the Classic, they run the panels (ribs) length-wise or horizontally with the building; all the water will run off the front or back while snow, ice, leaves, etc. will stay on top. The Grand Carport has roof purlins (strapping); the sheet metal is run vertically with a ridge cap and gable flashing, which results in more of a traditional style (peaked) building.
For garage packages, they have the Summit and Frontier models. Same as the carports, the frame doesn't change, the only difference between the two is the Summit has vertical side panels while the Frontier has horizontal.
They are able to provide you with a width span starting at 10' and reaching 30', working on either 3' or 4' on-center spacing for the length, and heights starting at 8' and working up to 13'.
Do your boat, your life and your pocketbook a favour and consider a great dry storage solution at home.
