Fall is almost here and we think it's one of the best times of year to go RVing. Much of the country transforms into a spectacle of colour and beauty during this time of year, but that's just a small part of why it's so great for camping. Here are just a few of the reasons why we think everyone should schedule a fall RV trip before they winterize.
Fall RV Camping
The colours: Fall foliage is nature's way of making us smile.
Hiking: Heading out on the trail can really be a magical experience during this time of the year.
Less Crowds: fewer people can mean reduced prices, less noise and a better opportunity to reset your mind.
No Bugs: Mosquitoes, gnats, and flies can ruin a good camping experience. Luckily for fall campers, insects have usually ended their relentless attacks so you can enjoy things like hiking your favourite trails, relaxing on the RV deck, or hanging out at night just watching the stars.
The Weather: With proper layering, fall can be extremely enjoyable for being outdoors. The crisp morning air is delightfully contrasted with the warmth of the midday sun. It's also the perfect temperature to huddle around a campfire and cook s'mores.
A must-have for fall camping is a safe, dependable RV. Here are a few things to consider when prepping your motorhome or trailer before you head out to do some fall camping:
Double-check tire pressures, brakes and towing gear. In some areas, fall temps may dip below the freezing mark, which could mean slippery spots on roads. Properly inflated tires, fully functional vehicle and trailer brakes and hitches, rated for the weight being towed, are essential for safe RV travel. Your best defense, in the case of rapidly deteriorating road conditions, is to wait until roads have been cleared and treated to drive.
Know how to operate your Heating System: This may sound silly, but if you've only camped in warm weather, turning on the heating system may not be in your skillset. It goes without saying that your motorhome's heating system should be checked out periodically by an RV expert to ensure safe operation.
- Inspect the outside furnace vent for obstructions that can interfere with the operation.
- Always test your carbon monoxide detector prior to using your RV.
- Make sure the return air vent inside your RV is free from obstruction and is clean.
- Use a vacuum to clean the vent if necessary.
- Inspect all heat vents for damage and to ensure they aren't blocked.
- After these simple checks, test the operation of the furnace.
- Turn the LP gas supply on, move the thermostat to the heat position and raise the thermostat above the current room temperature.
- After sparking the burner, heat should come on within a minute or so.
- If it doesn't start, have the unit inspected by an RV service facility.
Know how to protect your RV’s water systems. On the off chance you'll experience a hard freeze while camping in fall, someone in your crew should know how to disconnect water lines from tanks and drain them to prevent damage to water and waste systems.
Many RVers enjoy camping even into the winter, and you can certainly safely enjoy a fall camping expedition by employing these tips.
Take advantage of cooler temperatures, campground discounts, and fewer neighbours by planning a fall RV camping trip. Choose your destination, plan your activities and pay attention to the weather. Pack for variable temps, prep your RV for safe travel and don't forget to plan menus that create warm memories. It's fall and some of your best days camping by RV await you!
