Sweeping around the sheltered waters of the Salish Sea and the Strait of Georgia, this iconic driving circuit connects Metro Vancouver, Southern and Central Vancouver Island, and the Sunshine Coast into one seamless journey. Along the way, we travel by road and BC Ferries sailings through temperate rainforests, dramatic ocean passes, and vibrant coastal communities where local craftspeople, Indigenous artists, and independent creators make their home. 

Whether we are seeking boutique cideries in lush agricultural valleys, outdoor heritage murals, or quiet pebble beaches overlooking ocean inlets, this route delivers an unforgettable West Coast experience. Here is everything we need to know to navigate this epic coastal loop.

Leg 1: Setting Sail for Vancouver Island (Vancouver to Victoria) 

Our circuit begins in Metro Vancouver, heading south to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal to board a BC Ferries vessel bound for Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. The 90-minute crossing sets a relaxed pace as we glide through the picturesque Southern Gulf Islands, watching for marine life from the outer decks. 

The Southern Gulf Islands Detour 

If time permits, taking a detour into the Southern Gulf Islands provides a wonderful window into West Coast creative culture. Islands like Galiano, Mayne, Saturna, and Pender each host thriving artistic collectives and weekend farmers' markets. The largest concentration of galleries and creative studios is found on Salt Spring Island in the seaside village of Ganges, making it a rewarding addition to our island itinerary. 

Sidney-by-the-Sea 

Upon rolling off the ferry at Swartz Bay, our first stop is Sidney, located just minutes south of the terminal. Known for its charming, pedestrian-friendly core, Sidney is a haven for bibliophiles with an array of eclectic independent bookstores clustered within a four-block radius—offering everything from rare collectors' editions to local history. While in town, we can also explore the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, an aquarium and learning centre that highlights the living marine ecosystems of the surrounding waters. 

Capital Culture in Victoria 

Continuing south brings us into Victoria, British Columbia’s historic capital. Here, we can wander around the iconic Inner Harbour, admire regional Northwest Coast Indigenous artwork in local galleries, and visit the world-famous Butchart Gardens to stroll amongst sprawling, meticulously maintained floral displays. 

Leg 2: Totems, Murals, and Valleys (The Cowichan & Central Island) 

Heading north from Victoria along Highway 1, our journey moves into the heart of Vancouver Island's cultural and agricultural hubs. 

Duncan: The City of Totems 

In Duncan, we encounter a deep connection to First Nations artistic traditions. Known as the "City of Totems," downtown Duncan features a collection of over 40 outdoor totem poles carved by Coast Salish and regional Indigenous artisans, creating an open-air gallery embedded right into the town streets. 

The Cowichan Valley 

Surrounding Duncan is the Cowichan Valley, a warm, fertile region celebrated for its farm-to-table culinary scene. As we travel through its rolling hills, we can visit artisanal cheesemakers, craft cideries, organic family farms, and boutique wineries. 

Chemainus & Ladysmith 

Further north, the town of Chemainus offers a world-renowned visual spectacle. Transformed by a community art project, the town's building exteriors feature massive, detailed outdoor murals depicting local history, forestry traditions, and coastal life. Just up the road, Ladysmith greets us with a beautifully preserved historic main street lined with turn-of-the-century heritage architecture. 

Leg 3: Promenades & Bays (Nanaimo to the Comox Valley) 

As we continue along the Island’s eastern shoreline, the coastal landscape opens up into sweeping harbour views and bustling seaside communities. 

Nanaimo 

In Nanaimo, we can stroll along the waterfront promenade, taking in views of Newcastle Island and shipping channels. No visit to Nanaimo is complete without following the official Nanaimo Bar Trail, which allows us to sample creative variations of British Columbia’s famous chocolate-and-custard dessert at bakeries and cafes across town. 

The Comox Valley 

Moving further north into Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland, the Comox Valley showcases a laid-back blend of agricultural abundance and outdoor recreation. We can pick up fresh produce at local farm stands, drop into community craft breweries, or launch a sea kayak to paddle along the quiet, sheltered waters of Baynes Sound. 

Leg 4: Crossing to the Upper Sunshine Coast (Powell River & Lund) 

To begin the second half of our circle drive, we head to the Little River ferry terminal in Comox and board a ferry sailing east across the Strait of Georgia to Powell River on the mainland's Sunshine Coast. 

Lund: Mile 0 of Highway 101 

Driving north from Powell River brings us to the end of the road at Lund. This peaceful harbour village marks the official "Mile 0" of Canada's Highway 101. Serving as a primary gateway to the spectacular marine waters of Desolation Sound, Lund is filled with local craft shops, seafood eateries overlooking the docks, and outfitters offering kayak rentals for coastal excursions. 

Leg 5: South Along the Sunshine Coast (Lund to Gibsons) 

Turning south, we trace the coastline of the Lower Sunshine Coast, where ocean inlets cut deep into mountain valleys and artistic communities thrive in every cove. 

Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park 

Between Earls Cove and Sechelt, a forest hike through Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park leads us to one of the coast's most remarkable natural features. Twice daily, shifting tides force massive volumes of seawater through a narrow passage, creating turbulent tidal rapids and standing waves that attract extreme kayakers and naturalists alike. 

Sechelt 

Situated on a narrow isthmus between Sechelt Inlet and the open Pacific Ocean, Sechelt is rich in Indigenous culture and coastal craft. Here, we can visit galleries showcasing art from the shíshálh First Nation, relax on wide pebble beaches, and browse weekend artisan markets. 

Roberts Creek & Gibsons Landing 

Before wrapping up our road trip, we stop at Roberts Creek to view its famous community-painted beach mandala on the oceanfront pier. We then arrive in historic Gibsons Landing, a seaside town made famous by Canadian television history. Gibsons offers waterfront dining, local craft breweries, and independent artisan boutiques overlooking the islands of Howe Sound. 

Leg 6: Completing the Loop (Langdale to Vancouver) 

To close the circuit, we drive to the Langdale ferry terminal near Gibsons for a 40-minute sailing back across Howe Sound to Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. As the ferry glides past coastal fjords and towering coastal mountains, we arrive back in Metro Vancouver, having completed one of Canada's most diverse road trips. 

Strategic Planning & Practical Travel Tips 

To make the most of our time along the Coastal Circle Route, keeping a few practical logistics in mind ensures a smooth journey: 

  1. Reserve Ferries Early: Because this loop relies on three distinct BC Ferries routes (Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, Comox to Powell River, and Langdale to Horseshoe Bay), booking vehicle reservations in advance—particularly during summer weekends—is crucial to avoid sailing waits. https://www.bcferries.com/ 
  2. Optimal Pacing: While the route can be driven in 4 days, taking 6 or 7 days allows us to travel at an unhurried pace, leaving plenty of room for studio visits, side hikes, and waterfront meals. 
  3. Seasonal Timing: Late spring through early autumn (May to October) offers optimal travelling conditions, featuring warm weather, active farmers' markets, full ferry schedules, and ideal conditions for outdoor activities like kayaking and whale watching. 

Taking an RV on BC Ferries: Size Limits & Booking Guide 

Navigating the Coastal Circle Route in a motorhome, camper van, or truck-and-trailer combination is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the Salish Sea. BC Ferries regularly accommodates recreational vehicles of virtually all shapes and sizes, but doing so requires a firm understanding of vehicle classifications and booking requirements. 

RV Size Classifications & Capacity 

BC Ferries categorizes all vehicles into two primary buckets based on height and overall length: 

  • Acceptable RV Lengths: BC Ferries can carry standard camper vans, Class A/B/C motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers up to 20.0 metres (65.6 feet) in total combined length through online bookings. Rigs exceeding 20 metres can still be accommodated but require booking through BC Ferries Customer Care. 
  • Deck Placement: Over-height RVs are loaded onto the main vehicle deck, which offers high vertical clearance (up to 4.4 metres or 14.5 feet). 
  • Pricing Structure: Fares are calculated using a base rate for vehicles up to 20 feet (6.10 metres), plus an additional per-foot fee for every foot exceeding that length. 

Step-by-Step: How to Book Ferry Crossings for RVs 

  1. Accurately Measure the Entire Rig: Before visiting the booking system, measure the total bumper-to-bumper length. If towing a trailer, dinghy, or boat, measure from the front bumper of the tow vehicle to the furthest point at the rear, including hitch tongues, spare tires, and bike or kayak racks. For height, measure from the ground to the absolute highest point, including roof air conditioners, solar panels, or satellite dishes. 
  2. Access the Online Portal: Head to bcferries.com and begin the reservation flow by selecting the route and preferred departure date. 
  3. Select Vehicle Type & Declare Dimensions: When prompted for vehicle details, select "Travelling with a vehicle." Choose the option indicating the vehicle is over 2.13 metres (7 feet) tall, then input the total overall length in feet. 
  4. Choose Sailings from the Oversized Allocation Pool: BC Ferries maintains a separate reservation quota specifically for over-height and over-length vehicles. Because main deck space is shared with commercial transport trucks and tour buses, oversized space fills up significantly faster than standard car deck allocations. 
  5. Finalize Payment & Review Terminal Rules: Complete the reservation by paying the deposit or full fare online. Note that safety regulations prohibit passengers from remaining inside their RV while the vessel is underway; all travelers must move to the passenger lounges on upper decks once the ship leaves the terminal. Arrive at the terminal 30 to 60 minutes prior to departure to ensure smooth loading.
