The City of New Smyrna Beach’s 27 km (17 mi) sand shore draws visitors, surfers and snowbirds like a magnet every winter even though almost all surveys report it’s the most dangerous beach for shark attacks and surfing accidents.
Does that mean you should avoid New Smyrna Beach? Let’s look at some facts first. More than 400,000 people visit the area annually. Plus, it’s one of Florida’s most popular places to surf. According to the International Wildlife Museum, the chance of a shark attack fatality is one in 3,748,067, making the odds more likely of being killed by lightning or fireworks.
