Roam Mobility - Ready, Set, Roam
By Darcy Nybo
You’re all packed up and ready to head south. Then you remember to turn off the roaming feature on your cell phone so you don’t come home to a huge bill. Roam Mobility has changed all that for travellers heading to the United States from Canada.
Why Roam?
With Roam you get free calls back to Canada, something not offered by any US prepaid service. You set up your Roam account before you leave and your plan doesn’t expire for 365 days from your last plan. Roam Mobility is a Canadian company, so you pay Canadian dollars for the service. If you need assistance, they have a call centre in Vancouver that operates seven days a week in English and in French. When everything is factored in, Roam is less expensive than all the other roaming bundles out there.
Then there are the Roam SIM cards – a mini chip that sits inside your smartphone or tablet and links it to Roam’s network – that can be used in any unlocked phone, smartphone, tablet, etc. Their new LTE SIM combines all three sizes of SIM cards (standard, micro, nano). The best part is they have phone plans that fit pretty much every travellers needs so you’re never paying for something you’re not using.
In the near future you can also get a number in the US zip code you desire, and you’ll be able to transfer your existing US phone number to your Roam account. So if you use a US service like TracFone, AT&T or T-Mobile, you can switch to Roam and keep the same number.
Snowbird Plans
The Snowbird Talk+Text Plan is only $19.95 per month for unlimited talk and text and that includes calls back to Canada. That works out to 67 cents per day! If you want to add data to your plan, they have that too for $39.95 per month. You get the talk and text plan plus 2 GB of LTE data per month. That’s up 1 GB from previous offers.
How It Works
Order your new SIM card from Roam Mobility and they ship it to you for free. Or you can purchase it from one of their retailers (roammobility.com/where-to-buy). Then you simply activate the SIM card on their web site, pick your plan, schedule a start date and you are ready to go!
Once you get to the border simply swap out your existing SIM card with the Roam SIM card for complete nationwide coverage.
