A 100-site campground in Borden-Carleton will become the first Jellystone Park on Canada’s Prince Edward Island.
“People are excited about having a Jellystone Park on Prince Edward Island,” said Jason Decourcey, who manages the park with his wife, Rachel. “We recently attended two RV shows and the interest in Jellystone has been amazing,” he said, adding that reservations are running ahead of last year’s figures.
The Decourceys have managed the 100-site park for the past four years for owners Barry and Donna King. The Kings and the Decourceys have spent the past year laying the groundwork for the conversion to a Jellystone Park with the goal of attracting families with family activities and entertainment.
“We’ve always loved Jellystone Parks,” Decourcey said, adding that the new Prince Edward Island location complements other Jellystone Parks in Woodstock, New Brunswick and Kingston, Nova Scotia.
Several new features are being added to the Prince Edward Island park this year, including a gem mining sluice and a 30-foot-tall inflatable water slide that is 74-feet long. A miniature golf course will also be in place for the 2017 camping season. Plans are also in the works to increase the number of cabin accommodations. The park currently has three rental cabins.
Of course, beyond the Decourceys’ attention to detail is the magic of a Jellystone Park itself. Only Jellystone Parks have Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, and Jellystone Parks are famous for providing fun, family activities and themed weekends, such as Death by Chocolate, which includes a chocolate Slip 'n Slide, chocolate crafts and a candy guessing contest, and
Christmas in July, which includes campsite decorating contests, campsite caroling, and cookie and ornament making activities. The increasingly popular Halloween themed weekends include costume and campsite decorating contests and trick or treating activities.
The Prince Edward Island Jellystone Park is planning a Mother’s Day weekend on May 27th, with special activities designed for mom. A “Heroes Weekend” is scheduled for the weekend of June 3, which will feature a fire truck and Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser on site for the kids to check out.
“Last year, the fire truck participated in spraying the hay ride campers with water from the fire truck,” Decourcey said. “We also did a fire safety craft and a game of racing to put the fire out by using water guns to knock over stacked Dixie cups.”
A special weekend promotion of camp one night and get the second night free is also offered to military, fire, EMT, RCMP and police during Heroes Weekend. Decourcey said details about other summer activities will be posted to the park ’ s website soon.
Before joining the campground business, Jason Decourcey was a home builder and Rachel was a stay-at-home mom. After purchasing their first 5th wheel, the Decourceys and their three children spent a summer exploring Atlantic Canada and came to believe that the campground business would be a good fit for them. Jason began by working for Barry King for one of his Prince Edward Island campgrounds. He and his wife subsequently accepted a joint management position at their current park.
"Our vision for this campground is to bring something new and exciting to Prince Edward Island and to the local community,” Jason Decourcey said. “We’ve enjoyed being part of the community, getting to know the people and businesses of Borden-Carleton and surrounding communities. We look forward to having others discover this charming area of the island, which includes the entrance way to the island, the Confederation Bridge, the nearby red sand beaches and many artisan shops in the area.”
