There are many reasons to get rid of an old recreational vehicle. Motorhomes, just like any other material possession, can undergo exposure to the elements to the point where it is no longer functional. Recreational vehicle owners may also just desire a newer make and model to take on their adventures.
One thing is for sure, RVs need to be properly disposed of following the end of their life cycle. There are a variety of ways that RV owners can go when it comes to getting rid of an old RV.
Old RV
Donate to a charity
If your RV is still in usable condition, you may want to consider giving it to a charity organization. Some charity organizations in California take used vehicles as donations. If you find a charity that takes used cars, chances are they might also be interested in receiving a motorhome as a donation.
Whether or not they will accept the RV also depends on the condition of the vehicle. Recreational vehicles in better condition are more likely to be accepted, so it’s always a good idea to know how to repair an RV.
Sell it for extra cash
Used RVs can still find a second life when another person interested in mobile tiny living is willing to buy it, despite it being already used. In California, a lot of families like to purchase second hand RVs, since they only really use them for going on summer trips.
Alternatively, some buyers use RVs as an investment piece or as a last resort to cough up cash in tight spots. They either use working, second hand RVs to take out RV title loans in California or sell the motorhome for scrap. A lot of salvage yards or junkyards take RVs apart and sell the parts for better returns.
Give it away
The saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” holds true for RVs. Second hand RVs still hold a pretty good value in the market, but that usually applies for RVs that were made in more recent years. Older RVs may not fetch much in the market, so it is best to find a person willing to take it.
People interested in the outdoors, such as hunters or fishermen, may want to use the RV as a shed to store their tools or equipment. Alternatively, old motorhomes have also been known to be repurposed into a tiny home. In California, a couple managed to renovate a Keystone camper into a five-person tiny home.
Repurpose it
Similar to the examples above, an old RV can be repurposed into many other things aside from a mobile camper. Because of their size and space, RVs have been known to become tool sheds, greenhouses, and even kitschy food trucks. While the ability of a recreational vehicle to become a mobile food truck also depends on its mileage and condition, the transformative possibilities of an RV are endless.
Hire a guy
Certain laws and regulations in different states can make it difficult for any used RV owner to dispose of it straightaway to a landfill. But in California, there are people who can be hired to dispose of it properly. Most disposal services can take away RVs of any condition to be disposed of for as low as $500. Granted, of course, that the RV is within the limits of Southern California, or the areas in which they operate.
