Camping on private land helps sustain farmers
From Campertunity
As Covid-19 continues to slow-down businesses nationwide, our farmers and ranchers are working hard to produce food while sustaining their land. To earn an extra income, landowners across Canada have opened their backyards to campers with the goal of providing more campsite options, and promoting agri-tourism. How can you book a campsite on private land to help landowners sustain their property?
Introducing Campertunity, a website designed to bring camping into the shared economy by allowing private landowners to list their land for campers to book. Dubbed the “Airbnb of camping” by the media, Campertunity unlocks backyards that boast open spaces near lush forests, lakes, and mountains.
Many Campertunity hosts are farmers, giving you an opportunity to see your food go from earth to table. Touring farms, meeting animals, and learning farm-life are just a few ways Campertunity boosts agri-tourism. During times of economic uncertainty, Campertunity “gives farmers the opportunity to earn an extra income,” says Joanna Welburn, Campertunity host of Mack’s Boondock Ranch in Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island. Keeping our food local and putting money back into the economy is much needed at this time.
From her own stressful experiences of camping in crowded provincial parks, Nora Lozano, co-founder of Campertunity, decided to provide more options to campers by inviting landowners to list their land. “Campertunity is a solution to a problem,” says Nora. “There are far too many campers and not enough campsites. So, it’s great to provide an online platform where both hosts and campers can benefit.”
Campertunity hosts are stepping beyond simply providing a campsite by providing a camping experience. Hosts aim to increase bookings by offering both relaxing and adventurous experiences in nature, including horseback riding, fishing, and even goat yoga. Hiking, biking, water sports, and blueberry picking are just some of the activities to do on, or near, Campertunity campsites.
Entering into its second camping season, Campertunity has more than doubled in users and listings from its first year. While offering campsites that are wheelchair accessible or located close to urban areas, Campertunity makes the outdoors easily accessible to everyone.
