Since launching in 2021, over 2,500 people have taken the online pledge to camp responsibly while following nine simple yet crucial and necessary rules of theCamper’s Code.
- Plan ahead and be prepared. Safety first!
- Respect others. Keep noise levels low and adhere to posted quiet hours.
- Respect wildlife. Do not feed or approach wild animals. Instead, use binoculars to observe from afar.
- Control your pets. Know where your pets can go and keep them under control.
- Take only photos. Leave natural objects undisturbed and where they are, like mushrooms, flowers, and wood.
- Practice fire safety. In the current forest fire climate, respect nature and when possible, use a propane fire.
- Store food safely. Food and scented items can attract wild animals. Always store food in a wildlife-proof container or hard-sided vehicle.
- Don’t litter. Littering is not cool in the natural environment under any circumstance. If there are no garbage bins around, be kind and pack it out!
- Respect staff and signs. Please adhere to their guidance and everyone can recreate safely.
To help keep the campaign momentum strong and continue to build awareness and support, the Camper’s Code is set to launch a humorous and cheeky animation series using Instagram reels to inspire a send of shared responsibility, clarify appropriate camping behaviours, and ultimately help these 9 rules stick. Our goal is to encourage campers to pledge to follow the Camper’s Code, to camp responsibly as a result, and to encourage their fellow campers to do the same.
To stimulate and encourage our fellow campers to join committed pledgers, we are launching a series of social media animations humorously re-enforcing the nine simple messages to inspire a sense of shared responsibility and an understanding of appropriate behaviour.
The Camper’s Code will roll out these animations—one rule per week—starting May 18th on the Camper’s Code Instagram and Facebook pages and shared on partner Instagram and Facebook pages.
The first is Plan Ahead and be Prepared. Watch, laugh, learn, and share!
Jamie Cox, President of the BC Lodging and Campgrounds Association says that“the goal of the Camper’s Code is to build more awareness about desired camper behaviours, educate new campers on acceptable behaviours, and to promote the sustainability of British Columbia as a destination for future generations to enjoy.”
