It’s been two decades since I last owned a Ford Explorer—and to be honest, it didn’t leave a lasting impression. Back then, it felt more like a city-focused 4WD than a true off-roader. Since then, I’ve gravitated toward more rugged pickups and SUVs. Vehicles like the Ford Raptor and Bronco reignited the off-road spirit, and the F-150 Tremor proved that adventure and utility could coexist in a half-ton truck.
Fast forward to June 12, 2025, when Ford introduced the 2025 Expedition Tremor—a three-row SUV that delivers more off-road capability than you’d expect from a family hauler. It was a blast to drive on and off the pavement. But then came the real surprise: the unveiling of the 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor.

This mid-size SUV is the sweet spot for families and adventurers alike. It’s just as comfortable taking the kids to hockey practice as it is disappearing into the backcountry for a weekend of fishing, boating, or camping. It’s the kind of vehicle that earns parents the “coolest mom and dad” title—and gives couples a much-needed escape from the daily grind.

The 2026 Explorer Tremor is the most powerful and off-road capable version of the Explorer ever built. It’s designed for those who want to explore beyond the pavement without giving up everyday comfort or tech.
While we haven’t had the chance to get behind the wheel just yet, we’re very familiar with the impressive hardware and software Ford has packed into this versatile SUV.
Here’s what stands out:
- 18-inch wheels dressed in all-terrain tires
- 2.5-cm (1-inc) lift for better ground clearance
- Improved approach and departure angles (exact specs coming soon)
- Skid plates to protect the underbody
- LED off-road lights for better visibility on short winter days
- Recovery hooks for when the trail gets the better of you

Better living through tech, both on- and off-road
The Tremor backs up its rugged looks with real capability. It features a limited-slip rear differential for improved traction—though we’d love to see a locking rear diff in the future.
Two engine options are available:
- A standard 2.3L EcoBoost with 300 horsepower
- An available 3.0L EcoBoost pushing 400 horsepower—the same engine found in the Explorer ST
If you’re wondering whether the upgrade is worth it, the answer is a resounding yes. You’ll feel the difference every time you drive—and likely recoup much of the cost at resale.
The Tremor also includes an off-road tuned suspension with unique springs and sway bars. This isn’t just a cosmetic package—it’s built to perform.
