Top off, top on, top off, top on, as pleasantly warm mornings turn into blazing hot-as-your-head-in-interrogation afternoons, with temperatures grasping at 40˚C. What’s a wheeler to do when he gets a press release from Mountain Off-Road Enterprises (M.O.R.E) about a new roller sunshade? Order one.
Mount it on the rear rollbar of your two- or four-door Wrangler JK, and then pull it out over your head when you need a bit of shade. There are also two additional clips for four-door JK’s that you can mount on the centre rollbar to only shade your passengers.
How was it? The Good – It is the quickest and easiest sunshade on the market to deploy. Storing it doesn’t take up any needed cab space or effort. The top cut the sun significantly keeping the cab much cooler but still leaving us with the open-air feeling. With the windows up, it also cut down the wind in the cab to a pleasant level even at highway speeds.
The not so good. Up to 40 kph the shade doesn’t move or rattle appreciably but at highway speeds the bungees stretched, the top lifted and it was noisy. We shortened our bungees and that helped significantly. A call into M.O.R.E. revealed that the new units would have an additional pair of grommets.
A hard top fits over the roller shade unit, but our unit didn’t allow the soft top to be raised. According to M.O.R.E. they should have this rectified by November 2016.

Installation is easy with your hardtop off:

- Use a 13 mm ratchet to remove the bolt
- Use the factory bolt to remount the shade. Curse the fact that you can’t find your 13mm ratchet wrench.
- Pull the sunshade out and clip it into the d-rings for the Freedom tops. Our unit was missing the rubber end caps that will be shipped with yours.
- Pull the supplied bungees through the grommets and around the side rollbars.
- Bummer. Our unit wouldn’t let us raise the soft top.
