Why is the fishing so good in Tahsis?
The answer is: Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound have been involved in an intensive salmon enhancement program for six years. River and stream rehabilitation projects, volunteer hatchery programs, and collaborative agreement processes with the local federal Conuma Hatchery have increased the release of chinook fry by 25%. All of these significant efforts have resulted in a release of approximately six million chinook salmon fry annually into our local waters.
The 3 “P” – Projects, Programs, and Process – have produced some of the best salmon fishing/catching on the entire west coast of Vancouver Island.
Over the past 12 years, Westview Marina’s annual Salmon Enhancement Derby has raised over $280,000.00. All of these funds have contributed to the 3 “P” objective. On Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26, join in the fun and fundraising of this year’s Derby. The entry fee is only $60. And since the number of entries is limited to 200, you will have great odds of winning a share of thousands of dollars in gifts and cash prizes.

“IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FISH”
For 2017, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is projecting a better salmon return to Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound than the five-year average. Increasing numbers of salmon returning to these waters is seen as a reward for the enhancement efforts in the region over the past six years.
DFO also anticipates that approximately 50% of the chinook (king) salmon returning during the region’s 2017 season will be four-year-olds, and approximately 4% will be bigger five- and six-year-olds. It is likely that the 2017 season will see lots of tackle-straining tyee (13.6-plus-kilogram/30-plus-pound chinook) in the Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound fishery.
So replace your old fishing line, lube your reels, sharpen your hooks, and get ready for one of Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound’s better fishing/catching seasons.
