Avid Sportfishing
The first week of June 2017 will be remembered for its challenging weather conditions but more importantly for its phenomenal Chinook salmon fishing. After a slow start in the last half of May the waters of Cartwright Sound lit up this week with all day action for feisty Springs in the mid to high 20's. We can credit the large schools of Herring and Needlefish that moved into our Skidegate Point last week for our success.
The Chinook are larger than we have seen in the past couple of seasons, and is no doubt a result of colder, more productive ocean conditions as we find ourselves in a La Nina (cold water) cycle after years of warm El Nino currents.
All theory aside, the fishing has been some of the best we've seen in a long time, and the season has just begun.
