Story & photos by Perry Mack
Seaplanes and sailboats, festivals and fundraisers, cities and towns in the Okanagan Valley share a common thread and that is, that they do it on the water. Whatever month you come to enjoy the boating, check in the events calendar in the community nearest you, as there will be something aquatically attractive to you.
If you didn’t bring your own [fill in the blank], you can rent whatever you desire including kayaks, paddleboards, boats, jet skis, and any water toys you may have forgotten, lost or broken. Treat yourself to an Okanagan Adventure like parasailing over other boaters with a view of the mountains, fly on a jet board, or skip across the water in a thrilling jet boat ride.
Step out of your boat and into a floatplane for flightseeing tour, dodge the gals shooting their yoga videos at the lakeside, stop to listen or to play one the outdoor pianos on the boardwalk, or pull up a blanket to hear one of the live bands you find playing outdoors almost every night.
Just a few steps from almost every public dock are boat shows, rib fests, street fairs, dragon boat races, car shows, and for those of you who are athletically inclined - it seems there is a marathon or triathlon every weekend.
Let someone else be the captain and take in a dinner cruise one evening or use our featured ‘Dock and Dine’ guide in this issue to cruise to a culinary delight.
And let’s not forget the wildlife. Not the kind you see between 11 pm and 2 am, although there’s plenty of that, marine birds soar overhead, beaver and fish fill the lakes, deer, bear, sheep, coyotes and cougars cruise the shoreline, while Ogopogo lurks in the unfathomable depths of Okanagan Lake.
Fill up the tank, put wind in your sail, and enjoy one of the most entertaining places on the planet. There is something for everyone.
You’ll find charts marking hazards, history and points of interest for all your favourite locales throughout the publication.
Safe boating!
