Don't let the colder weather stop you from getting out on the water this colourful season. The summer crowds have vanished leaving calm water and quiet anchorages. However, with fewer boaters, one must be self-sufficient and below are a few extra tips in remaining safe.
Check the weather forecast. Warm and cold air can create high winds and waves. Fog makes it difficult to navigate and for other boaters to see you.
Dress for the water temperature, even if the daytime temperature is mild. This can help to slow the onset of hypothermia if you end up in the water. Another good precaution is to wear a lifejacket, this aids in keeping you afloat after you lose muscle control.
Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
Make sure your boat and engine are in good shape. Ethanol-based fuel can allow water contamination in the tank so use an additive to prevent water in the fuel line from freezing. If using portable fuel tanks, keep a spare on board.
Keep a lookout for debris and chunks of ice that could penetrate your boat’s hull.
