National RV Week - May 23-28

How do you describe the RV lifestyle to your friends and family? People often have a lot of misconceptions about RVing - that it is only for the “outdoorsy” types, or that it’s just for retired people, when in reality we know, RVing really is for everyone. Go RVing Canada’s on-going mandate is to dispel these common misconceptions around the RV lifestyle and to inspire families across Canada to take advantage of the fun and affordable vacation RVing has to offer.
Whether you’re a parent who wants your kids to be out in nature and have authentic camping experiences, but don't necessarily want to give up all the comforts of home, or you’re a young couple looking for fun alternatives to your regular spring break vacation, the RV lifestyle can bridge the gap between tent camping and staying in a hotel.
There’s a reason why there’s more than one million RVs on the road in Canada today. Today, 67 percent of RVs in Canada are owned by people under the age of 55 and 90 percent of RV owners say that it is the best way to travel with kids. RVing is also much more financially accessible to young Canadians due to the wide range of models that can fit a variety of lifestyles and budgets – some even start as low as $6,000! When you consider that the cost of traditional cottages are typically out of reach for many Canadians, it’s clear why RVing is growing in popularity among all family types.
The RV lifestyle is also one of community and kinship, and Go RVing Canada encourages families to reconnect with their sense of adventure. On June 13 & 14, 2014, Go RVing Canada set out to launch the first annual National RV Weekend in celebration of everything that makes RVing great – adventure, community and fun! We know that a childhood isn’t a childhood without some wild in it, but for children facing life-threatening medical conditions, connecting with this side of themselves can be difficult.
Go RVing Canada rallied campgrounds across the country to sell wish lanterns, with 100% of the proceeds going to Make-A-Wish® Canada to help children who are facing life-threatening medical conditions. At 10 pm, campers gathered at each of the participating campgrounds to make a wish and shine their lights for children who need it most.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the launch of National RV Weekend,” says Jennifer Klotz-Ritter, President & CEO, Make-A-Wish® Canada. “On behalf of our courageous wish kids and their families, we thank Go RVing Canada, participating campgrounds and participants for their generous support of our mission to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”
Every year Make-A-Wish Canada receives hundreds of wishes from children facing life-threatening medical conditions and in order to help fulfill these wishes, they rely solely on the generous support of companies and donations. National RV Weekend helped make this possible and was a natural partnership for the two organizations – both being focused on giving a new found sense of adventure to all Canadians and children alike, while seeking to bring as much fun to campers as they do to their wish kids.
In 2014, the wish-granting organization fulfilled 480 wishes. This year, their goal is to grant more than 500 live-transforming wishes. Go RVing Canada raised $20,000 for Make-A-Wish Canada on National RV Weekend to help make this goal a reality.
