Back in August 2017, we wrote about the new Bollinger B1 electric AWD truck, ‘Inspired by the best off-road vehicles of the last century, this new Sport Utility Truck (SUT) is like a greatest hits compilation updated for the 21st century.’
We were impressed by the concept, the design, and the utility, and disappointed that we couldn’t get our hands on one to drive.
It’s a year later and Bollinger has announced the B2. Following on the heels of the mid-size pick-up truck craze, Bollinger announced their intention to build an electric version of the B1. Both trucks have dual motors, all-wheel drive, hydro-pneumatic suspension, in-wheel portal gear hubs, 120 kWh battery pack, large trunk space, and a patented pass-through door for long items.
The bed in the so far CAD-only (computer aided design) pick-up will be 1.2 m wide by 1.68 m long (4’ x 5.5’), and with the tail gate down will hold a 4x8’ sheet of plywood. Flip up the rear window and they say you’ll get 72 sheets of ½” plywood in the truck.
The new truck is expected to have a top speed of 160 kph (100mph), get 320 km (200mi) on a charge and will fully charge in 75 minutes.
Given the range and charge time, the road-legal B2 makes sense for around town or around the farm. It will be able to haul 2200 kg (5,000 lb) and have 38 cm (15”) of ground clearance. Taking a cue from Jeep Wrangler, the structure of the cab will be protected by a roll cage and you’ll be able to remove the doors. And while it isn’t a convertible, Bollinger has designed the trucks with removable glass panels (except the windshield) for an open air driving experience.
Although they released some video of a prototype B1 running last year (which we saw at SEMA Show 2017), Bollinger has yet to produce fully working pre-production prototypes - they say early in 2019, with assembly lines running in 2020.
